And new hire retention is lower than it\u2019s ever been. Some employees quit before completing a single week in their new job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>You know how important it is to retain employees after hiring them. A few quick reasons:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Employee retention creates a stronger organization-employee bond.<\/li>\r\n<li>Your team remains productive when they\u2019re at full strength.<\/li>\r\n<li>A perpetual state of hiring is expensive. Retain your employees. Save recruiting costs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So this begs the question \u2013 <em>how?<\/em> How do you retain your talent for the long haul?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Throw out the \u201cswag\u201d boxes<\/li>\r\n<li>Show their family you\u2019re here to support them<\/li>\r\n<li>Weave their uniqueness into your uniqueness<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We even had the chance to hear from new hire and Employee Communications Consultant at NFP Indianapolis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bradleyjamescarter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brad Carter<\/a> on why Day 1 was so special for him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 100px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Throw out the \u201cswag\u201d boxes<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A swag box, really? We can do better.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Your new talent didn\u2019t join your team for the fancy perks and benefits. They chose you because you\u2019re fundamentally different. And nothing says you\u2019re different like a swag box&#8230;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That was a joke. A swag box. <em>Really?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Luckily, you have something way better\u00a0\u2013\u00a0your unique culture that attracted your new hires in the first place! Lean into it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>How can you show your new talent they\u2019ve made the right decision?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One way \u2013\u00a0Host an event or happy hour before their official start day. Casually introduce them to your team and the wider company. Don\u2019t make them give a speech. Just a quick, informal \u201cwe\u2019re glad you\u2019re here.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Brad shared his manager was key in forming relationships and encouraging the right moves prior to and on Day 1. So encourage your managers to introduce their new teammates to the company.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>See? A heck of a lot better than a transactional swag box. Your employees will remember how you treat them and how you make them feel. Before and after they start.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 100px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Show their family you\u2019re here to support them<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>New jobs are scary, especially if you have to pack up your life and move across the country. Or start remotely with a company when everyone else has worked together in-person for years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Companies often forget about the incredible pressure new hires are under with their families, especially if they\u2019re a sole provider. How can you ease this transition for them?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ask them to introduce themselves with slides in their first week. Your team wants to know <em>who<\/em> just got hired. But let\u2019s go deeper than a casual introduction at a happy hour.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Help them prepare with a template presentation and an example. And encourage them to share more about their personal life than their career. Families are most important in their lives. Why wouldn\u2019t we want them to share that element of their lives with your company?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A few ideas:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>What\u2019s their significant other like?<\/li>\r\n<li>Do they have kids?<\/li>\r\n<li>What makes them tick outside of work?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This presentation shouldn\u2019t be a r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Drop the career highlights. Your employees can check their Linkedin profile later. Plus, they\u2019ll get to know the new hire\u2019s work strengths and weaknesses plenty over the coming months. And hopefully, years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When your employees feel comfortable in their job, they:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>are more productive<\/li>\r\n<li>lead more effectively<\/li>\r\n<li>refer their talented friends to apply<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Brad had the opportunity to present about himself to his new team at NFP. \u201cI\u2019ve never shared that much about myself and my family on Day 1. It was eye-opening.\u201d He received messages after the virtual presentation from coworkers wanting to grab coffee or beers to talk more about his life.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><em>That<\/em> is how you make a better connection with new hires and their families. Weave their uniqueness into your uniqueness<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Every human has a different approach to work.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Some are silent and prefer music to human conversation.<\/li>\r\n<li>Others want to share every intimate detail of their life \u2013 and I mean, <em>intimate<\/em>.<\/li>\r\n<li>But most hover in between. They want to do their job but need support from coworkers.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>No matter who you\u2019ve hired, they\u2019re a human being. Not a r\u00e9sum\u00e9, Brad said.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Weaving everyone\u2019s personality into your culture is more a positive outcome of building an awesome culture. Not a reason to do so.
